“I statements”
Mental health referral conversations often go more smoothly when people use “I statements” such as “I am worried about you” rather than “you statements” like “you are depressed.”
Here are ways to begin a mental health referral conversation using “I statements”:
- “I was worried about you when I heard about (mention incident or incidents).”
- “I care about you and wanted to know how you are doing.”
- “I feel like things are different between us, is something going on?”
