People occasionally feel sad or anxious, but these emotions usually pass within a few days. Depression lasts longer, interferes with day-to-day activities, and is much more than just being “a little down” or “feeling blue.”

The American College Health Association found that about 30% of college students reported feeling “so depressed that it was difficult to function” at some point in the past year.
