Recognize the problem

It is not Derrick’s job to make a diagnosis but he can Extend his knowledge and learn about mental health issues.

Some signs of substance abuse include:
• Drop in attendance and performance
• Engaging in secretive or suspicious behaviors
• Sudden mood swings, irritability, or angry outbursts
• Deterioration of physical appearance or personal grooming habits
• Unusual smells on breath, body, or clothing

Derrick: Some guys said you were out drinking.
Will: What would they know? They were at the team dinner.
Derrick: I don't know, some guys said you've been drinking and partying a lot.
Will: We're in college, it’s not just about soccer. I have other stuff I have to do.
Derrick: I know. We just missed you. We were worried about you.
